Thoughts to have as you suddenly imagine dieing:
Walter wasn't sure if he was dreaming in bed as an old man or whether that had been the dream. All the future possibilities he had imagined by getting pulled into an artillery outfit fled. Thirty six hours in the infantry and, alone, he was overwhelmed by the assault. He didn't know what to do when they came; so he did nothing, and was shot. It was brutal. Painful, humiliating and abrupt. He thought of his mother as the universe went black. A voice out of his head that he did not know spoke: "There's a whole beautiful world that you haven't seen yet... Stars and planets and pure thoughts you couldn't understand before." He wanted to accept it but, frightened he didn't know which side of wakefulness he had been on; or that he'd ever be on...
